Ashlyn Condullas is a TSAA student who was nominated for the State’s first “STEM Girl Power Camp” that was held in Brisbane during Queensland’s Women’s Week in March.  Ashlyn is a high achieving Yr. 10 student leader who excels in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and studies Senior Astronomy as an accelerated student.

After attending the camp, Ashlyn sent the following letter to TSAA:

Dear Mr Platz,

I’ve just returned from the STEM Girl Power Camp and I’m happy to say it was a very memorable experience. Over the last few days I have met many inspiring women in the STEM field and feel honoured to have been given this opportunity. These women have encouraged me to pursue a career in science and have taught me that women can have leading roles in this field.

The activities included in the camp and World Science Festival were both educational and stimulating and I have gained an insight into many different areas in STEM careers.  I hope, through my experiences, I can encourage other students to become interested in STEM education.

As a result of the experience, I now aim to complete a National Science week project encompassing women in STEM.  I have been liaising with two students from our region and we feel a project targeting primary school students would be beneficial.  To complement our project, we would like to visit schools and educate students of the careers and opportunities for students interested in the STEM field. We feel there are many career pathways that we ourselves discovered on our trip and we would like to pass on this knowledge.

In regards to my project I have also spoken to Dr Catherine Ball, who is renowned for her work in drone technology and 2015 Telstra Business Woman of the year. As apart of her roll she participates in TED TALKS and we discussed the possibility of hosting a TED Talks Conference.  Dr Ball was excited by the idea and said she would be happy to attend.

Once again, thank you for nominating me and giving me the opportunity to participate in this wonderful experience.  It has greatly broadened my knowledge of career options in the STEM field.

Kind regards,

Ashlyn Condullas
