2015 Student Astro Conference

Students observe and collect data on double stars at Mt Kent's CDK20 research telescope.
Students from the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns and Townsville participated in this year’s Annual Astro Conference and Professional Field Experience hosted at QUT, UQ, USQ, Brisbane Planetarium and Mt Kent Observatories.  For five jam-packed days, the students participated in astronomy related activities and projects, attended lectures and talks by astronomers and used research telescopes to collect data for an astrometry project on double stars.
Bestowed with the opportunity to network with university academics whilst enjoying privileged access to university facilities and demonstrations, the students acknowledged the experience as “life-changing” and a high-light of their young lives.
TSAA sincerely extends a special thank you to:
  • Prof Graeme White (TSAA academic advisor);
  • Prof Brad Carter - USQ (TSAA Patron);
  • Dr Stephen Hughes - QUT;
  • Prof Michael Drinkwater & Astronomers (UQ);
  • Dr Jonti Horner, Dr Rhodes Hart, Jack Souter & Alex Hons (USQ).

Without their valued and extremely appreciated assistance, this event would not have been possible.

Applications are now being accepted for next year’s conference & field experience event.  Due to the nature of the activities and facility limitations, no more than 8 participants can be accepted to attend.  If you are studying Senior Astronomy or Senior Astrophysics and would like to take part in this unique experience in 2016, it is advisable that you register as soon as possible.  The estimated cost to attend (ex Cairns) is $950.
